The Wine: Mtsvane for Mariam Orange 2019
Zurab Topuridze Mtsvane for Mariam Orange is a natural wine made from 100% Mtsvane indigenous grapes farmed sustainably in the Southern Georgian village of Dablatsikhe. Vinification in qvevri, traditional big terracotta vessels, spontaneous fermentation, no filtration, no additions.
The Producer: Zurab Topuridze
Georgian natural vigneron Zurab Topuridze’s family, whose farm is located in Southern Georgia’s Dablatsikhe village, has been, as it’s often customary, been making wine for generations. They had been making natural wine long before the term existed and, like many Georgian winemakers, proudly held on to their winemaking heritage even under the long Soviet era, where they risked being forever lost. Zurab made his first wine when he was only 13 and in 2010 established his own winery, where both farming and winemaking are strictly traditional and natural. He now farms about 15 hectares of Chkhaveri and Saperavi, which ferment wildly, see extended maceration in qvevri and see no fining, filtration, or added SO2. Each bottle is a masterful interpretation of this ancient and unique terroir, unlocking with every sip untold complexity and depth.
